SFgo in SOMA
So far, San Francisco has four SFgo signs
-- "variable message displays" -- in operation. Two are shown here: on 10th street south of Mission and on 9th street near Tehama/Howard.*
Today only one message was displayed in a two-part repetitio
n: "Traffic Change - Private Vehicles on EB Market Street...Right Turn Only at 6th and 8th Streets." Traffic on 10th Street is southbound and away from Market, but it's a big shift in traffic patterns that probably merits frequent reminders at several locations.
Note the buildings and structures near the two signs: mostly commercial
along with accompanying billboards. SFMTA staff have reported that the SFgo signs have been well-received in SOMA although it's not clear by whom. NOPA and Alamo Square neighbors have pointed out that Fell and Oak streets -- where SFgo standards now stand -- travel through primarily residential neighborhoods.
The rear views of the signs
provide their own visual "enhancements." The last photo was taken on eastbound Market Street on a mobile and temporary sign board. NOPA and Alamo Square neighbors propose these signs as one alternative if messages are needed on Fell Street.
*(The other two operating SFgo signs are on the Embarcadero just south of Mission and on King east of 2nd).
